David Kilpatrick at String Jam Club

Chris Martin shot this video of Kelso’s David Kilpatrick singing another happy song at String Jam Club, end of May – Clive Carroll’s fantastic guitar skills being the real attraction, of course, with the usual support from several floor spots.

The small guitar is a Brook Bovey 21.5″ scale tuned to F#C#f#bc#f’# (DADGAD four frets up). The song is traditional with a strong influence on the guitar setting from Dáithí Sproule’s version as performed by Altan. See:

Cohen live in Edinburgh – Marianne YouTube

Leonard Cohen Marianne Live Edinburgh 2008

A very crude video from my still digital camera. Xavier Mas is playing a baritone-tuned Spanish laud, and didn’t play a single instrument with single strings all night – 12-string guitar, bandurria, big laud and a modern cittern-style laud all of which he made sound very Eastern mediterranean by bending the notes. LC was on great form and positively skipped off the stage before returning for each of three encores, 73 years old or not!

Good Formby, bad form? Club hits the headlines!

KELSO Folk and Live Music Club has hit the national headlines after two members wrote to the ‘Southern Reporter’ complaining that George Formby classics performed by Roger Platfoot contained racist language. Keith and Cate Ryan have threatened to report the club to the Police Hate Crimes Unit if Roger plays the ‘Mr Wu’ songs (and others) again. (more…)
